Chapter 21

While Laura was signing up as a law enforcement consultant for the Duluth PD, St. Louis County Sheriff’s office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Sgt. Connor Fitzpatrick showed up for his appointment at the Raging Ford Medical Center as scheduled and had to wait forty-five minutes until they could see him.

“Sorry, Sergeant,” Dr. Christina Hamilton said. “We had a couple of tricky appointments this morning, and we’re not at full staff today.”

Nurse Marla Branson took his vitals and recorded them in the computer and left.

Dr. Hamilton checked Connor’s hand wound.

“Looks like it’s healing. How did this happen again?”

“A police incident.”

“Well, let’s keep the butterflies on and cover it with a fresh waterproof bandage. You’re current on tetanus shots. Infection is always a concern, so come back immediately if there are any changes or if you develop a fever.”

Connor’s exam seat was still warm when Dr. Patrick Webber poked his head in Hamilton’s office and asked about Connor’s injury.

“So what do we know happened last evening?”

Hamilton shrugged her shoulders.

“They aren’t really telling us anything except there was a police incident.”

“Isn’t there a police report?”

“I haven’t seen one.”

“Was anyone else in the car with him?”

Hamilton looked at Webber.

“The car? He didn’t mention a car. Why is that important?”

“Because I heard Nurse Branson say there was a passenger in his car when the shooter hit them.”

Hamilton looked surprised.

“I don’t know anything about a car or a passenger, nor am I aware of any other gunshot wounds or injuries coming in last night related to a police incident, Patrick.”

“Keep your eyes and ears open.”

“Sure,” she said. What she knew was her business only, and she would share as she saw fit with whomever she chose. Webber, on the edge of retirement, wasn’t in that clique.

She waited for Webber to leave then called Branson into her office. Her next patient could wait a few more minutes.

“We have to talk,” Hamilton said.

Dr. Patrick Webber went back to his office and made a call on his personal cell phone.

* * *

Kelly Rogers got a newsflash on her cell phone of a shooting incident outside the Fitzpatrick home. Few details were available, and the non-emergency phone lines at the police station went to voicemail. She called Laura, got no answer, tried Jenna and got no answer.

She only reached Erica who ran next door and found Laura’s shop closed and dark, teeming with people out front who were peeking through the windows into the shop as if the answers to everything that happened last evening would be in the darkened shop. Presumably, some were reporters. She called Kelly back and promised to go down to the station and get the scoop.

“See if you can find out anything on Jenna, too,” Kelly added. “I can’t reach her again.”

Next, Kelly called Sven Mortensen’s private cell and he couldn’t talk.

“Seriously? You can’t talk?”

“It’s crazy here.”

“I need to know if Connor’s okay, and where in heaven’s name is Laura? Her shop’s closed. This is Tuesday! Her shop’s always open on Tuesday. Is she hurt?”

“Can’t talk, Kel.
